KODA Camp Midwest promotes Kids of Deaf Adults (KODAs) by enhancing their self-identity, sense of belonging, confidence, leadership skills, and love by attending KODA camp program run by Children of Deaf Adults (CODAs) surrounded in nature.
To host summer camps where KODAs develop a strong identity as a KODA through their own autonomy, community cohesion, and reduced stigma of being a KODA.
Examples: Feeling welcome and included, having a sense of community, connecting with each other, providing a space for campers to grow, and having a good time at camp.
At KODA Camp Midwest, we understand that there may be other relatives of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, such as siblings, grandchildren, or nieces/nephews, who are also interested in attending KODA Camp. Everyone with a Deaf or Hard of Hearing relative has unique experiences, memories, and relationships with them–ones that deserve to be celebrated!
However, we have a specific focus on KODAs and limit attendance to this group for a few reasons. KODAs often experience unique challenges and opportunities as a direct result of their specific status as children of Deaf/Hard of Hearing adults–thus, KODA Camp provides a safe and supportive space for KODAs to connect with each other, share their experiences, and build a sense of community. Although KODAs and other relatives of Deaf/Hard of Hearing people often share some experiences–such as exposure to/experience in ASL and Deaf culture–the experiences and relationships between them and their Deaf/Hard of Hearing parents/relatives are different. Most KODAs are raised by their Deaf/Hard of Hearing parents while those with other Deaf/Hard of Hearing relatives have a different relationship dynamic that may not be relatable to the KODA experience. By focusing specifically on KODAs, we are able to tailor the camp experience to the needs and interests of KODAs. We believe that by limiting attendance to KODAs, we can provide a more focused and meaningful experience for the small and close-knit KODA community.
We appreciate your understanding and support in maintaining the mission of KODA Camp Midwest!
Maybe it’s the goofy counselors, camping out under the stars or just hanging out with friends, but there’s something about KODA Camp that goes so deep under the skin that kids, and now adults, reminiscence about upon years later. It’s hard to describe, but it’s a magical place.

"He seems more accepting to be a KODA, and our relationship has grown closer. I am a DeafBlind parent, and he seems to be more inclusive now. "

"My child had a sense of place of belonging. Where people also had the same experiences, no questions needed to be asked (do your parents drive? as an example). Have experiences with fellow KODAs that are freely exchanged, a "normal kid" experience without having to think about the 'different' deaf parents."

"I’d say it’s helped me learn more about the deaf community and how involved I am and could be in it and just taught me that I’m not alone and lots of others experience the same things whether it’s good or bad. It’s given the best people in my life and given me so much more to be grateful for."
