We believe that every KODA deserves the chance to experience the ability to find their identity, grow in their self-confidence, have KODA love, and accept their belonging.

Why we are “KODA” Camp

At KODA Camp Midwest, we understand that there may be other relatives of Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals, such as siblings, grandchildren, or nieces/nephews, who are also interested in attending KODA Camp. Everyone with a Deaf or Hard of Hearing relative has unique experiences, memories, and relationships with them–ones that deserve to be celebrated!

However, we have a specific focus on KODAs and limit attendance to this group for a few reasons. KODAs often experience unique challenges and opportunities as a direct result of their specific status as children of Deaf/Hard of Hearing adults–thus, KODA Camp provides a safe and supportive space for KODAs to connect with each other, share their experiences, and build a sense of community. Although KODAs and other relatives of Deaf/Hard of Hearing people often share some experiences–such as exposure to/experience in ASL and Deaf culture–the experiences and relationships between them and their Deaf/Hard of Hearing parents/relatives are different. Most KODAs are raised by their Deaf/Hard of Hearing parents while those with other Deaf/Hard of Hearing relatives have a different relationship dynamic that may not be relatable to the KODA experience. By focusing specifically on KODAs, we are able to tailor the camp experience to the needs and interests of KODAs. We believe that by limiting attendance to KODAs, we can provide a more focused and meaningful experience for the small and close-knit KODA community.

We appreciate your understanding and support in maintaining the mission of KODA Camp Midwest!

Top 5 Reasons Your Child Needs KODA Camp

1. Level Playing Field

KODA Camp provides a rich environment full of new friends, monumental achievements and memorable activities. We provide supportive relationships, challenging opportunities, but most importantly, we give all children a level playing field from the start—without the pressures of school or suburban life. Everyone is equal at KODA Camp.

2. Camp Changes Your Child for the Better

Campers’ parents have reported that when their children return home from camp they are more mature and responsible, and are more equipped to stand up for what they know is right.

3. Unplug from Society and Enjoy the Outdoors

Imagine your child choosing an outdoor activity over the cell phone or a video game. At KODA Camp, we focus on the importance of outdoor activities, while learning to live in a group setting. Camp is a place to develop face-to-face relationships and reflect on nature. It’s about kids being kids in a safe, comforting environment without the pressures of technology. Whether it’s a fast-paced game of capture-the-flag or just a  walk to arts & crafts room, our campers enjoy a lot of physical activity they otherwise would not get at home or school! And let’s face it, the more physical activity… the better for everyone!

4. Learn About Being a KODA

Identity and understanding deaf culture are two major aspects covered at camp. Our staff comes from a wide variety of background and experiences that help give insight and share all the wonderful parts of being a KODA. From sharing personal experiences in both the hearing and Deaf worlds to learning about multicultural beauty of sign language to diving into the rich history of Deaf culture. No matter what experience or background all KODAs are welcomed and treasured.

5. It’s FUN

Maybe it’s the goofy counselors, camping out under the stars or just hanging out with friends, but there’s something about KODA Camp that goes so deep under the skin that kids, and now adults, reminiscence about upon years later. It’s hard to describe, but it’s a magical place.

"My child had a sense of place of belonging. Where people also had the same experiences, no questions needed to be asked (do your parents drive? as an example). Have experiences with fellow KODAs that are freely exchanged, a "normal kid" experience without having to think about the 'different' deaf parents."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"I’d say it’s helped me learn more about the deaf community and how involved I am and could be in it and just taught me that I’m not alone and lots of others experience the same things whether it’s good or bad. It’s given the best people in my life and given me so much more to be grateful for.
